Dale grew up at Spivey then went to Friends University, where he met Betty Robinson at a ping pong tournament.  After his brother was killed in a car-train accident in 1962, Dale lost the heart to carry on the dairy business he had with Bill.  He found himself in the insurance business but he realized it wasn't for him.  He had all sorts of health problems probably due to stress, so in 1981, at the age of 64, Dale began his third career.  He took a job at Levy Special Education Center and loved it immediately.  All those years of bucking hay bales and lugging milk jugs gave him the strong back necessary for lifting children in and out of wheelchairs.  He says, "the reward comes every day when one of these kids does something he couldn't do before -- they can't tell you in words, but you sure can feel it".  When Dale and Betty were in their 50s, it was she who took care of him when he had health problems.  Now the roles are reversed and she has to have a walker and he takes care of her, doing cooking and housework.  Betty says of him, "Dale has always been so giving, that's the best thing about him.  He was an old-fashioned milkman.  He drove all over town with a big ring of back-door keys.  He let himself in, put the milk in the fridge and would tiptoe out before anyone woke up.  He did that for many years”. The following sums up Dale's philosophy: “If you ask me, staying busy keeps you healthy.  You want to take better care of yourself when you know somebody needs you.  That's the best reason to get out of bed every morning".  They live in Wichita, where they've lived for many years and spend summers in Minnesota at their cabin.
