MY FAMILY

My family had many branches on both sides.  My father’s mother was a lovely lady, aristocratic, with nice antecedents.  Her husband died early. I never saw him. She had two sons and two daughters.  One daughter, Florence, had a son, George.  Her husband also died early in their life together.  Both daughters were very musically inclined.  They played the piano and had good singing voices.  Their other daughter’s name was Hilda.  She never married.  They were a nice-looking family.  The sons were very handsome men.

My father was one of them.  He was Joseph Whitney Medairy, the younger son.  At this time of my life I don’t recall lots of details.  One of them is whether his brother had children.  This family lived in Kirkwood, a suburb just outside f St. Louis, in a large older house.  My father was a good man, also musical, and made us very happy.  He was a buyer at a large department store in St. Louis, Stix, Baer & Fuller.  He traveled occasionally to buy musical things for the store.

We later moved to Atlanta, where he accepted a position, but he became very ill and this forced us to return home to St. Louis.  There we temporarily stayed at my Aunt’s and my father was bedridden with illness of the liver.  He was in pain and finally passed away.  I was 10 years old.

At this point, my mother was forced to support us.  She had a Children’s Shop for a while , then worked at St. Luke’s Hospital for the Superintendent.  We had an apartment together.
