Fred Murfin
by
Gerry Chang, Michael Estivo, Bilal Hassan
Fred Murfin was born on February 18,
1919. He was born in El Dorado, Kansas. He moved to Wichita and attended
Robinson Elementary School. He went to College Hill Middle School. When he got
to high school he attended East High. He usually had 500 kids in high school
with him.
The classrooms back then were smaller than the ones
now. He had chores like we have now.
The polio epidemic was very wide spread because he
didn't have the vaccine for it then. They would shutdown the schools because of
polio.
He had field days in school. He went to the water
festivals where there were games and floats.
He first heard of penicillin when they let the
schools out in quarantine.
He lived three blocks from school and on the way
back home, he would always make his brother's nose bleed by rubbing it.
The holidays back then were different then the ones
we have now. For Thanksgiving he usually had turkey. He had about twenty people
from his family that attended each Thanksgiving dinner. It was usually a big
celebration.
During Christmas he didn't sing carols, but he did
sing grace. The children now have more presents than he did back then because
there were money problems. For the Fourth of July he didn't have fireworks but
instead he went fishing quite often. The circuses were very entertaining
experiences for the children.
